Oil paint is Kate's preferred medium. Her semi-abstract paintings are greatly influenced by the environment. The light, atmosphere and geological formation of the land are important as the painting develops. Sometimes she uses paint to build up a thick impasto, and at other times in the thinnest wash. Working in her studio she uses her memory and imagination as well as sketches and photographs.
Our existence in this world is fragile and our awareness of it is unique. Through my paintings I seek to convey this sense of awareness, and awe in front of nature and its creator. Inspiration is drawn from many sources – the immediate countryside around – light effects and atmosphere – found objects – poetry ; ideas from any source can be a starting point.
